This was so lovely. I wasn't sure that the author would be able to bring John back from that terrible first impression, but it turns out that he's just grumpy and socially awkward, not genuinely awful. It was really wonderful seeing his layers get peeled back through the book and learning that he's a secret cinnamon roll who'd do anything for the people he lets in. And Mary was of course amazing, kind and generous and brightly optimistic even as she struggles with her mother's criticisms. Their romance developed softly with a big dose of mutual pining and a gorgeous slow burn. Such a wonderful, heartwarming story.
The only thing that really bothered me was the interfering mothers. Meddling friends/relatives is one of my romance bêtes noires so it brought my enjoyment down just a little, though I did like when Mary set firm boundaries with her parents at the end.
The cover isn't the best. It doesn't represent the characters very well and the only pet in this book is a cat!
