party games had a better plot that actually made sense, but was fairly predictable. don't stay up late had a very messy story and resolution which made it feel rushed. both stories had a very corny ending.

I had a tough time deciding how to rate this compendium. The stories are better than Goosebumps (more character development, better writing, scarier) but one had very little horror and both were repetitive and transparent. None of the characters had redeeming qualities that made me want to root for them. Both stories were disempowering to women and people of color. I don't suppose an editor could possibly have helped Stine to come up with more creative descriptors for Black people than "black," or for Latino people than "tanned" with "black hair" and "small black eyes"? Mental illness treatment facilities and medication were stigmatized and misrepresented. And in both, a girl ends up pining after a 'bad boy' who literally put her life in danger. What kind of messages are these for young people? I still found the stories finish-able, but I'm not sure why...
