Honestly this was fabulous. I have read three other series by Takahashi and I have enjoyed them all. I wonder if this gets a bad reputation based on the anime adaptation?

Sorry it took me so long to read and finish this first volume, especially seeing as how this was most of my friends’ first manga. It is really good. I thought it was just going to be fake romantic drama between Kagome and Inuyasha, but it has a bunch of cool monsters, great lore, and engaging side characters. It really is worth the try.

Man, I just love Inuyasha.

I decided to read the manga to remind myself of the story since I really like the anime but didn’t finish it. It’ll be a while before I get to parts that are new to me, but that didn’t keep me from enjoying this.

I think the current premise is pretty simple. They’re collecting all the shards, and Kagome is jumping between her world and Inuyasha’s. Until they do more with Kikyo and Sesshomaru, it feels kind of villain-of-the-week which is fine.

Kagome has a strong personality that matches the tone of the series really well. She adapts to danger very quickly despite being pretty normal. When you think she might get upset, she just focuses on getting things done. She jumps into scary situations with a lot of bravery even when she’s unprepared. She will wanna fight you for being evil even if she wouldn’t stand a chance in a one-on-one, and I love her for it.

Kagome is always important to the scene in some way even when Inuyasha is the one attacking. I appreciate that she doesn’t feel like an audience member of her own story, and they made sure she was competent despite being human and vulnerable. She finds ways to contribute by using a bow and arrow or guiding Inuyasha, and you can tell how much they need each other to make things work.

I like how action packed this is, and the art style is great. The humor in this series is also good because it balances the violence and high stakes.

It’s fun to see the beginning of Inuyasha and Kagome’s relationship. I like the slow development toward them caring about each other. The switch from acting antagonistic to bickering but being a team is done well. I think it’s cute how Inuyasha clearly cares more than Kagome thinks, and she’s just barely starting to like him.

Reading these was a fun time, and if I didn’t have any knowledge of the series before this, I think I’d feel the same way.
