I wasn’t so sure on this in the beginning but it really grew on me and by Book 3 of 3 I was properly hooked. Ended on a cliff hanger so now I’m going to have to track down the next book. Loving all the Japanese demons – or more specifically yokai.

Oh, the memories. My best friend’s older brother introducing us to the show together, staying up way too late to catch the latest dubbed episode on Adult Swim, when I was probably way too young to do so. I’ve always wanted to tackle this manga ever since, and we’re talking decades down the line, but somehow I never finished. I bought the first five VizBig editions and read (and loved) those, and I remember cherry-picking the final volumes as Takahashi wrapped up the series, but I never read the whole thing cover-to-cover. I’m gonna change that now.
I remember the first time I read this first omnibus back in 2016, and I was blown away at how much more and yet less it contained than the anime—and I mean that in the best way possible. The anime was a little less adult—less cursing, less nudity, less gory violence, and more filler with pointless conversations about astronauts and ramen noodles. The manga was like a breath of fresh air, with new details in all the right places but knowing exactly when to let the action run quick. The pacing is second to none. The character, Kagome, in particular shines in these volumes. Her anime counterpart is a bit watered down and definitely comes across as more vapid and typical teen girl due to her filler dialogue and dumb jokes. The manga, while still appropriately demonstrating her age, also lets her personality shine brighter—she’s still naive to this world and young and sheltered, but in my opinion, without all the pointless harping and whining, she comes across much more grounded and believable and even mature. Inuyasha himself had his moments in the manga too, where I actually laughed out loud. His humor is so damn dry, and I forgot a lot of that because the anime focused his character down to simply cynicism and violence most of the time.
Yes, the manga has its faults. The villain-of-the-week engine is very much alive and well here. Almost all side characters barring Kagome’s family and Kaede will never be seen or heard from again. But you just have so much fun tearing through these well-paced stories that you just don’t care. Besides, each main character is so well thought out, so fleshed out and real, that you can’t help but love them.
I am so excited to continue this series!

Great reread even after all these years. I would place it in the fantasy/horror category.
