The first few chapters of this book really got me into this one, Hugh Howey sure knew how to write a hook. The characters HAD me, I was invested in them and then the rug got pulled out from under my feet.

I will admit to being a pretty impatient reader - as soon as I became aware of the premise of this book I was flipping ahead in pages to find an explanation. I love to spoil it for myself what can I say? However, the fact that I had to do this so many times goes to show that this book has many twists and turns that will have you turning the (many) pages.

Despite this books length, I felt it was necessary to get to where it did. Towards the end I did really notice how many holes were left for further books in the series - which I am not a massive fan of in novels but what can you do.

I thought I'd seen every kind of dystopian novel out there but here's another one to put on your list Hunger Games / Divergent / Maze Runner / The Road / 1984 girlies.

“We rot,” he said. “All of us. We go bad down here, and we rot so deep that we won’t grow anymore.” He blinked and looked up at her. “We’ll never grow again.”

Rereading this and loving it just as much as the first time. It brings forth all the emotions in a world that at first seems different from our own but ends up with many parallels both inspiring and haunting. Well written and immersive.

The ending might be a little pat, but the journey to get there is so deftly traveled that I honestly don't know that it matters how the story ends.
