Although Trace’s character feels older and wiser than his age, this still feels like a book that resonates with important messages for its intended audience. Trace is sweet and gentle and walks the fine line of wanting to please the people in his life by not rocking the boat and finding his voice to call attention to the struggles he and his family face.

Great

This child’s perspective on adult issues is amazing. It’s breath taking and heart wrenching. It is truly addictive, and yet child appropriate. I enjoy her as an author, one of my favorites. I love how she captivates you from page one, and she makes a story you continue to want to know.

An excellent novel about mental health and drug abuse for middle school readers.

The book is written in verse which may not be for all readers, but the audiobook version is well-done and might make this one more appealing.

Feedback from the Teen and YA Book Clubs: Teen readers enjoyed the story but disliked the verse poetry: some had difficulty understanding the story because of the formatting, and others thought the verse poetry was poorly done and didn't think it added to the story.

A great story by Ellen Hopkins. This book follows two brothers dealing with the fallout of their parents divorce and the older brothers traumatic brain injury.
