Lots of fun, I did have problems with the mystery and I think it was very predictable, but I liked the book overall!

Jan 2023 3.5 stars

A fun blend of a hard-boiled detective story and wizards and fantasy. It works well--fast paced and only a few slight missteps. But generally a fun blend of two genres.

2019 reread update: the original review still stand. Knowing what’s coming in later books makes it more fun too.
adventurous funny medium-paced

The women in this book are basically present to cry, flirt, and be moms. Even when they're given moments of strength, they're still weak compared to the men. Only reason this gets two stars is because aside from the blatant misogyny the story is quite good. I just can't give the sexism in this one a pass.

I forgot how sex obsessed this series was.

A nice little escape. A little cheesy at times but that might just be the gumshoe trope. Didn't go into much backstory at all about any of the characters but I liked the set up enough to go right into the next book.

I really enjoyed this! Much more than I thought I would. I loved Harry. I mean, I was expecting him to be batman and then he wasn't and I loved that.  Only reason this isn't 5 is that I'm trying to be more conservative In my 5 star ratings. But yeah, good book!

I read this book for the 2025 PS challenge of "two books with the same title" and this was book 1 for me. I liked the first couple of chapters, but then it just kinda went 'meh' on me.  While I do read a lot of supernatural type books, I don't read a lot of "hard-boiled PI" books, because I'm not really into that, but thought this might be a nice mix, but it wasn't great. I didn't hate it like some, but I certainly don't love it either and probably won't pick up any others in this series.
