Read aloud to the kids: 4, 6, 9. My kids enjoyed it and I enjoyed talking to them about which characters were real. I love how it teaches the origin of Santa Claus and I think it's perfect for a child at the age of questioning the reality of Santa.
A different kind of read for me. Was interesting to enjoy the tale of Saint Nicolas and Christmas traditions we have today interwoven with true world history.
I agreed with other reviewers that the first 1/3 or half of the book is wonderful. Still grounded in factual history and slowly weaving in the magic. But by the end, I too, was wincing from the cliches and pace of the story. The final chapter was also grossly lacking in the religious significance of Christmas; the beginning did this well without being preachy or unapproachable. Surely he could have described a church at the North Pole or ended with a service singing Silent Night. (And I'm a very secular-accepting, quiet person of faith, but to leave it out seemed to violate the very person of Nicholas who we adored in the first half of the book.)
Still, it is a really sweet way to wrap all things Santa, religious and secular, into a single package. Just treat the 2nd half as a farcical comedy.

I enjoyed this look behind the story of Santa Claus and other Christmas traditions. A good blend of fiction and real-life. Very cute
A cute idea but the premise got rather repetitive at times. The story follows Santa throughout the history of the world. Sometimes his connection to world events worked and other times it seemed forced. A stronger narrative on the history of Santa would be L Frank Baum's.
