Certainly a different kind of Christmas story. It was a weird mixture of plausible facts and out of this world fantasy. I was really looking for something that I could believe in but the people that Nicholas meet along the way felt more like Forest Gump if he were immortal. Sure it was fun and I am starting book two, How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas, but I feel like there was a lot of lost potential here
When I saw the title, I had far different expectations. I was thinking comedy. The reality was it was a history book with some fiction thrown in. It has a bit of a liberal agenda, and the author wasn't very careful with some of his facts. That said, it was a fun book and a decent read.
Fantastic book that I read aloud with my boys. Great story about St. Nicholas, the Christian roots of Christmas, and the magic of Santa. We all loved it.
With twenty-four chapters, The Autobiography of Santa Claus is the perfect advent calendar for any book-loving nerd. Guinn does an admirable job of "helping" Santa weave in fairly solid history. I've read this book every year since 1994 and don't plan on stopping any time soon. Is it the best book ever written? Certainly not, but I sure do love it. Even if I got behind again this year...
Suspend your disbelief and you will feel like a kid again reading this book.
A wonderful holiday book to be read a chapter at a time beginning December 1. A great story about how Santa Claus came to be!
I really enjoyed learning so much about the history of Christianity and the evolution of Santa’s name and the Christmas holiday. My son in particular was fascinated by everything he learned (I think it was a bit long and detailed for my 7 year old but she still enjoyed it). Jeff Guinn does a great job of tying a ton of research together to make a really believable story about the existence of Santa Claus!
Our only issue was so many derogatory comments about Santa’s weight. Don’t people love and accept Santa’s size? We felt uncomfortable every time it was brought up.
Overall we had a great time learning so much history! Thank you Tarcher Perigree!

This is always a favorite to reread at Christmas time. I love the historical details over the past nearly 2000 years. I also enjoy how Christmas traditions around the world are described.

What a perfect book to kick if my holiday reads… as the author reveals in the introduction, he was tasked with writing the autobiography of the man in red and provides a stunning story for fans of all ages to enjoy. Love the way it blends history and lore. Using world history, Church history, Christmas history, and of course Santa Claus history Mr Guinn weaves a wonderful and coherent narrative of St. Nick through the ages. By far the most entertaining way to learn about significant events over the last two thousand years, especially those relating to Christmas. The research involved was impeccably presented. I loved the audio… the narrator has a great "Santa Voice" that adds to the magic and makes the experience. If you don’t believe in Santa I'd definitely recommend this magical tale!
