Bonjour Tristesse is great, but when you then read A Certain Smile afterwards, you get the stronger sense that it was, indeed, written by an 18 year old. There is a kind of dramatic intensity to Bonjour Tristesse, almost like a teenager imagining what adult life would be like. Whereas A Certain Smile is a lot more mellow, a lot more real, in a sense. Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed both, and look forward to reading more Sagan in the future.
