Just wasnt interesting enough and the narrator was “calling it in”
This is a really postmodern book and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing yet. Honestly it's just a very weird read. If the summary sounds weird to you (it sounded hella weird to me) then you'll definitely find the actual book itself mega weird.
This book is a sort of heightened reality, slightly elevated above our own, but only just so. People speak in ways they usually wouldn't, in a way that reveals their inner selves more than typical dialogue would. And this can be very entertaining. Sometimes it's exhausting and I can't tell if that's the point. It's like someone with extreme anxiety telling you about something shocking. Was it really that bad or are they just exaggerating? Or maybe both?
Not sure when this book was written but Byron Gogol reminded me of Elon Musk to the point where I thought about Grimes A Lot. Not that I really think she was ever in any situation like this (her family comes from some level of wealth I can't even begin to imagine) but I reckon being around someone like that would invariably be exhausting.
I don't know how to feel about this book. I don't know if it's good or bad. I don't know if it's well written or not. But I enjoyed reading it. It's a little too weird to recommend so if the summary or even the first chapter is off-putting to you, then I don't think this is for you. Aside from dragging a little too much, especially at the beginning, I think it was good. I think. I really don't know but four stars it is.

What an absolute hoot. It took me a while to connect, but once I did, it was a joy to read this delightfully weird and lightly upsetting book. The descriptions of Hazel by others are so, so funny -- especially when they're describing just how visibly depressed and suicidal she is. You can tell Nutting has fun while writing, and I had fun reading.
Spoiler
The book also requires a certain amount of comfort with deeply uncomfortable ideas -- being a non-consensual test subject, inter-species attraction, choosing to live life with sex dolls, suicide as means of escape, sex as a means of contamination, and more! -- but turns out I think it's extremely fun to head down that path in the right, joyful hands.

Rounding up a little, but I just LOVED this. So funny and weird and original. This lady is twisted and I love her for it.
3.5 stars.
Read this after learning that the show had been canceled, largely out of curiosity and a desire to experience a complete story in the universe. The story the book tells is different from the one the show tells, and in some ways it's a weirder one, with more time and depth devoted to exploring notions of codependence and authenticity. It's darkly funny -- moreso than the show -- and the morality is muddier. All things that speak highly of it.

Such a good premise. Such weird execution. Def want to watch the show!
