Touching on the personal side of Superman's life through 4 stories, told across 4 separate seasons of his life, this story manages to have a big emotional impact. Superman's personal struggles, from struggling to fit in to being frustrated that he can't do everything, show that there's far more to the classic superhero than just his strength and invincibility. I loved it.

All-Star Superman who? To me, this is the best Superman story. It’s the perfect characterization for every single player of Clark’s mythos, be it Clark himself, the Kents, Lex, Lois or Lana. Every decision made by a character makes sense in the context of their personalities. And this book does it in mere 4 issues! I love it so much! And the art! So old school and innocent. I love Superman being a great square block with the tiniest and cutest of smiles. That’s how he should be, sturdy, dependable and yet, non-threatening (to the right people at least). He’s not a pushover though, his reactions to Lex and even to Lois when she reads his letter to his parents shows a righteous and firm anger that reminds us how kindness must never be confused with weakness. And that evil will not be tolerated. I wish this book was what inspired creators to make media about Superman, not “Injustice” or “The Dark Knight”. Sups is a kind and gentle farm boy with the power to carry the world, and he does that with nobility and grace. I haven’t read many Superman comics, but I suspect this will always be my favorite.

I’m eager to read more Superman after the James Gunn movie and thought this would be a good place to start. It’s a cute retelling of the Superman origin story, told from the perspective of a different character for each season, and I found it to be a very breezy read. The simplistic art style was also so fitting and really added to the charm.

This and Morrison's All Star Superman are the greatest Superman stories of all time. You can skip just about everything else.
