This book just sealed Andrew Joseph White’s spot as one of my favourite authors.

an absolutely phenomenal book. the way this book wrestles with the reality of transition, womanhood, and madness within the confines of a historical fantasy is as breathtaking as it is nauseating. a collection of characters that it is impossible not to root for inside of a system that you know will probably never let them win. i loved it even more than hell followed with us which i wasn’t sure was possible. my only complaint is how quickly the end feels just because i would have loved to live with the characters of silas and daphne for a little bit longer.

i loved everything about this - white is so good at planting the plot and then letting it bloom in its own time. silas (due to situation? just plain character choice?) has such a great internal monologue and takes every compliant i had about benji from hfwu and just blows it out of the water. i can not wait to see what white does next! also have to highlight mary - i can't help but adore a wild woman
