My jaw was on the ground at the end of this one. Trans, neurodivergent rep in a spooky & bloody Victorian setting. There is so much visceral rage packed into this book. Not sure if I enjoyed reading it, but I’m glad I did. Thankfully it ends on a hopeful note, so all of the suffering wasn’t for nothing.

The author writing is very detailed especially in the main character’s body dysmorphia and autism- especially the panic attacks and involuntary movements. Through their writing, I was able to imagine myself (a cis female) in Silas’s shoes and understand how the behaviors of those around him affected his psyche.

While a YA story about teens is not my normal reading taste, I just felt drawn to this book. The cover of the book is stunning and I always love a gothic atmosphere. The dark, gritty topics in this novel drew me in, especially with my love of Victorian medical practices being tickled throughout. Although the characters are teenagers this isn't one of those books that just feels too young to be enjoying as an adult. Absolutely loved this book, would recommend to anyone who favors the darker themes in life.

Loved the depiction of queer and neurodivergent characters in a time when that language was nonexistent. A very good read, but the ending did feel a bit rushed.
