If I could give 6 stars I would. Infuriating. Heartbreaking. Disgusting. Immaculate. The body horror, which doesn’t really come in until pretty late in the book, is perfection. I loved Hell Followed With Us. This was better. The cruelty of some of the characters was unspeakable but so vivid and well written. I can’t recommend this book enough for those who can stomach it. Trigger and content warnings galore though so take care of yourself.

I read this in one day - very fast read. I really enjoyed the horror aspect to the point I know if this was a movie, I would have shied away from specific scenes because the gore would've gotten me (this is POSITIVE, I love body horror). I found I enjoyed Silas's inner monologue. With the novel being YA, I found all the plot lines predicable which I feel is what made it a quick read.

This book is perfect in theory, I just couldn't vibe with it.
I love the set up of this but didn't like where it ended up going. It had turned into a mystery, rather than a horror, and I just wasn't invested.
My biggest issue was the writing, this is written in modern American English, despite being set in 1800 Britain. Modern Americanisms such as 'sidewalk', 'pants' (instead of trousers), 'quit it', 'what is she on about' and 'it's not like x right?' really took me out of the book. This mean that I couldn't become invested as I kept being reminded that it wasn't real.
Also, more body horror / gore please, I liked what we had, but we didn't have enough yet.
I love Silas and Daphne (or what they could be) though.

What an absolute gift this book is. I could not put it down and was fully enraptured in the story, the characters, the tension, and the love. I will think about this story forever. Probably one of my favorite books I’ve ever read, which is saying a lot, considering I don’t normally read historical fiction or gothic horror. But oh my god is this book a masterpiece.
