This has been my favourite of the series so far! It was much easier and more engaging to read, so much happened it was like reading more than one book, as most of her work is. I really loved how the characters developed through this one, Brianna and Roger especially.
i do think the Claire’s reactions and mental state post all the very horrific things that happen in this book are kinda downplayed or looked past? We hear less from her perspective after which makes sense, and a few references to her flashbacks and ptsd, but otherwise it felt very business as usual. Especially it skipping like a month? Between her kidnapping and then the next chapter.
Even with the time stamps, I struggle to follow the time line of the book a lot and I have no idea how old Jem is supposed to be by the end lol.

More character than plot

While this book spanned 3ish years not much happens plot wise. That is to be expected because there were basically years of resentment with little skirmishes leading up to full rebellion. On the character front there is no shortage of mishaps that happens to each and every person on Fraser’s ridge. Murder, rape, kidnapping, etc etc. The next book is bound to have more action since we end this book at the end of 1776.

I think this is my favorite book in the series so far. Engaging and gut-wrenching. The plot was so much better than whatever the hell DG tried to do with TFC, and it was more focused on Jamie and Claire and their family. Some of my favorite JC moments came out of this book, as well as some really tender family moments, which is all I really want for these babies 🥺
