kind persistence is rewarded
Anni strives for the secret of a 200 year old recipe. Charming story of Indian cuisine for children (and adults too!). Includes a brief history of biryani and a link to an online recipe for the dish.

Anni loves her uncle's biryani that he sells at his cafe and wants to learn how to make it. When she does, she realized that he has a secret ingredient that he won't tell her.

I loved the themes of this book that revolve around family and food traditions, but I thought it ended abruptly. It needed a few more pages to feel like a complete story.

This is a really cute story following a very linear path, although I think the ending was rather abrupt. The illustrations, however, are utterly gorgeous, and a welcome breath of diversity.

A sweet and short illustrated story about a little girl who wants to make the best biryani! I picked this up on a whim since it was part of the Amazon First Reads selection for the month, and it was actually the perfect buffer between my last and next read~

Great to read with a little one at night :)

Even though I'm a grown-up, I found the story amusing and fun - with a good building of tension in little Anni's challenge! The artwork is great - the colors are rich, the characters personalities come through, and the buildings and scenery set just the right mood. Children, especially budding foodies, will love Anni and her quest for the best Biryani ever.

I pondered my star rating, and sadly settled on three stars due to the very bad decision to *not* include a Biryani recipe in this book. Children will be frustrated that they can't see a Biryani recipe, and use it (with parental supervision of course) themselves. A link to a recipe on the internet is included, but that's absolutely not sufficient or appropriate for a child. Even if it was, websites don't last forever, and they sometimes rearrange their contents, which breaks links. I strongly recommend that a second edition be issued with a good biryani recipe included.

Also, my Amazon First Reads copy is digital... and VERY difficult to read in that format. I highly recommend buying a physical copy of this book.
