- I enjoyed this story of a 23 year-old girl who is just on the verge of breaking up with her boyfriend of 9 years, when he breaks his back in a diving accident. Was he showing off for her? Did she somehow encourage the dive? How can she leave him now that he is a quadriplegic? What would everyone think? An excellent first novel - to be sure. Deservedly compared with both Jane Hamilton's 'A Map Of The World' and Jacquelyn Mitchard's 'The Deep End Of The Ocean'.

I'm just mad at myself for finishing it. I should have shut the book and walked away after the first paragraph of disturbingly explicit sex. But I read about it on a list of "books with biggest plot twists" and I was curious. Well yeah--the reason you don't expect the ending is because you expect done kind of resolution that makes sense! I was bitterly disappointed. So hollow.

A very moving story about a man who becomes paralyzed and the internal struggles of his fiance.

A slow-moving but just beautiful story (it doesn't hurt, I'm sure, that much of it takes place in my hometown).
