I wish I could say I understand all the hype about this book, but I just don't get it. It reminded me of Gone Girl, about which everyone also raved and which I loathed in both book and movie format. I guess the writing style is just not my gig. Sorry.

I listened to the audiobook and I can’t imagine it any other way. The narrators did an excellent job.
The book is written in part as a podcast so the audiobook format is perfect. It is told in part by journalist West McCray who hears the story of Sadie and is so consumed with finding her that he starts his own podcast. The story unfolds as he speaks with her family and follows what few clues he has. The story is also told by Sadie as she is on her quest for revenge against the man who hurt her sister Mattie. The dual time lines and narrators plus the podcast format were a bit confusing when I tried to listen to the book in small chunks but once I really got into it the confusion left and I could not stop listening. This book has left a lasting impression on me.

This book was killer, but like I’m mad about the ending 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Whoa. This one was both super intriguing and at time hard to listen to. The story alternates between a podcast called “The Girls”, which tells the story of a family looking for nineteen-year-old Sadie, who left home in search of her thirteen-year-old sister’s murderer. The man she is after was a boyfriend of her mother’s who abused Sadie as a child. He has gone by many names, and her search criss-crosses Colorado. The ending is not what I expected, and the abuse was hard to hear. The full cast production, with had sounding like a podcast, was excellent though. Trigger warning: sexual abuse. Recommended for grades 10+.

This was deep. Much better than the first Courtney Summers book I read.

five stars for the book, two stars for the epiloge - wtf was rhat?

not sure how to put into words how i feel. i feel sad, mostly, and a deep sympathy for the girls in this story. this was an impeccably written story, and i’m glad that Summers is getting the attention and praise that she deserves.
