Loved the split storylines and how they interweaved and connected in the end. Sadie is a character that will stick with me for her grit and her love.
This book is so hard hitting, which I feel like doesn't happen very often with YA. Lots of triggers for abuse and violence and an ending that left me so very sad. I loved it though. The back and forth was seamless and it was captivating through out. I'll definitely consider other books by this author in the future and will be looking out for more podcast type reads.
TW: childhood sexual abuse and molestation
Summers, Courtney. Sadie. Wednesday Books, 2018.
Sadie has disappeared. After raising herself and her sister in spite of her mother's drug and alcohol addictions, Sadie hits her breaking point when her mother disappears and her sister is murdered. Sadie is convinced she knows who did it, and she's on her way to find that person and get her revenge.
This book is told in the form of eight episodes of a podcast a la Serial and will likely be fantastic as an audiobook. I will agree with other reviewers that the conclusion was quite obvious to me from the beginning, but that did not diminish my enjoyment of the story itself. Sadie and I have quite a lot in common - older sisters born to single parents, abused by a man who took advantage of our mothers and threatened to abuse our sisters if we told, etc. The infrequent flashbacks that Sadie experiences were not triggering to me but may be to other survivors. I enjoyed this book the way I often enjoy episodes of Criminal Minds: we may already know what the conclusion is, but it's the journey and the explanation of the motivation behind the actions, which made up the bulk of the story, that was so fascinating. This one will definitely be popular with teen patrons.
Recommended for: teens, fans of thrillers or procedural crime shows
Red Flags: drug abuse, alcohol abuse, language, sexual abuse/molestation, murder
Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
Read-Alikes: I Am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall, Mind Games by Kiersten White, The Night She Disappeared by April Henry
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley for the purpose of review.

OMG!! Just, OMG. More of a review probably after I pull myself together.
So no, this can't wait. It's been about 15 minutes since I finished listening to it, and I just have to get it out of my system. My heart is still racing.
I listened to the book on audio, and I just binged it. It's way past bedtime (my kids will be waking up soon, and I'll probably regret staying up) and I'm so keyed up and my fingers are tingling to write a prise for this book.
It's one of the best if not the best audiobook I ever listened to. The pace of it was just so amazing, it made me feel all the things. I was excited for most of it. Then there were parts when I was scared, sad, disappointed, melancholy, ... The whole experience was just so intense.
I was putting off reading it because the book is so hyped. And I don't like that, I usually wait to forget about it being hyped, because I get high expectations about a book, too high expectations and then they don't live up to it. But I'm so glad I read it. It more than lived up to the hype.
So ok, now you know that the book is really good. What else to tell you about it? I don't really know what to tell and how not to tell too much. You best read it for yourself.
Oh, one more thing. I have a love/hate relationship with the ending. It's probably realistic and that's a good thing. But I still wish it ended differently.
I just want to experience this all over again. I might just listen to it again tomorrow.
Read on my book lovers!

I listened to this as an audio book and it was amazing. The book features a podcast so the audiobook format really fits in with how the book is written.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I’ve literally picked it up and put it down so many times. But when I saw it easily a available as an audiobook at my library I went for it. And honestly I think that listening is the best way to read this one.
Because the main premise is that this is a podcast. So listening gives you the sense that you are actually partaking in this application. Not sure how reading it would have been.
That all being said, this book jumps from Sadie’s perspective to the narrator of the podcast. I think as true crime podcast have become so populate, this book came at just the right time. Sadie is looking for her sisters killer, she’s stumbling her way through a sick world. You want her to succeed. You doubt she will.
I recommend this book for fans of true crime podcasts(even though it’s fiction). For fans of “Truly Devious”, “the female of the species”, and even “The Lovely Bones”.

I feel awkward rating a book that deals with such serious and important issues so low but... it was SO BORING OMG.
I liked the premise of a Serial-esque podcast and the audio cast did a stellar job with the narration, but the plot made time trudge backwards through molasses.

Goddamn.
Hands down the best audiobook I've ever listened.
