This maybe an unpopular opinion but this just wasn’t for me! I struggled to get gripped and felt it was very slow going. I was disappointed with the storyline and felt that it dragged. I managed to get through it till the end, but it was a slog! However, don’t let me put anyone off...this maybe perfect for some, so see what you think and give it a go yourself!

the words “the severin” and thoughts of my brain on fire will be stuck behind my skull for a while

The best book I've read this year. Megan Abbott's best book. It's always amazing to see a writer at full power, and this is a great example. Layered, dark, suspenseful and bursting with noir, GIVE ME YOUR HAND is the kind of book that lingers in your mind for a long time, haunting you with its complex and evocative story. Don't miss it.

I love a thriller and read a lot of the woman-loses-her-memory/girl-in-the sort of books and this was a really well written different of thriller. Really liked it.

Okay, I took a long time to think about my thoughts on this book as this author tends to be one that most of my friends and people I trust haven’t liked her works. This is my second time reading a book by Megan Abbott and I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this story. Personally, I liked this story quite a bit. I can see why this book wasn’t for everyone but I think knowing a somethings would have helped my expectations and thus my enjoyment of reading this book.

Going into this book, I didn’t know it was broken up into 3 parts. The first part is slower paced than the rest of the book because it’s more background for the two main characters (Kit and Diane). If more readers knew this then maybe they would be more willing to stick with the story. Once I made it to Part 2 things in the story really picked up. I found the background information helped me understand and enjoy the way the story wrapped up.

The last part is the STEM aspect was really nice as I was a part of Thad program. It’s not necessarily the biggest part of the story but if you don’t like science and math mentioned in books then this may not interest you. The competition that occurs between people in the program definitely seemed accurate. Even the “we’re in this together until we’re not” comrades was accurate. It’s definitely hard being a woman in STEM and can be sort of isolating at times, so I can see why Kit and Diane couldn’t fully click and hurt each other, themselves and others.

Megan Abbott has worked well for me so far and I think I’ll continue reading her books for now. She may not be an author for everyone as she seems to write stories about women who have complicated relationships and secrets. If you’re in the mood for that sort of book them give one of her stories a shot.
