I wasn't sure what to expect when starting this book but I enjoyed it. It's a light read and it really provoked me to think. I found the concept of the story interesting at times and admired the main character's self awareness. I believe this is the first translated book that I've read, I'll be sure to check out some more.

Convenience Store Woman was a very interesting and short novel that explores the world through the eyes of Keiko Furukura who works at a convenience store. The first 1/3-1/2 of this was really intriguing but it lost me in the second half. I found Shiraha’s character to be insufferable, which is definitely the point, and it pulled me out of the story. I found Keiko’s character to be extremely compelling and I was rooting for her the entire story. I can see what folks love this book, but it didn’t land for me.

Convenience Store Woman gives me Eleanor Oliphant vibes. Funny, awkward and a good quick read.

Had some great discussions but damn it was somehow incredibly depressing and dull at the same time.

This book is quirky and charming. I respect that Keiko just has no ability to be normalTM (whatever that even means) and her dedication to her routine and the one thing she likes. But god, Shiraha is insufferable and sometimes reading his bullshit commentary was so grating. And everyone pressuring and bullying Keiko was grating. It seems like that was part of the point, but at times it was difficult to read.

not everyone wants to get an adult job, get married and have kids

some of us want to work at a convenience store, be single and not have kids

that's it you have read the book!

I would've liked this much better if Keiko had curb-stomped Shiraha outside of the convenience store.
