I’m neurodivergent, my partner is neurodivergent, my closest friends are all neurodivergent. Only a couple of phrases here or there by Furukura were more on the shocking side, but otherwise, I understood her POV. Some of her POV was also kind of surprising but also made sense, such as someone who would be interpreted as an asshole being so direct and nasty to her but she found it kinder also made sense because she was given very clear information. And yeah, there were definitely genuinely nasty asshole comments made to Furukura.
Of course there was huge irony with the dude she was cohabiting with — Shiraha — that would go on and on about how repressive and regressive society is to “oddballs” and yet, put her through the same thing he was bitching about and using her rather than going against exactly what he claims he hated and just let her be who she is and support her.
All in all, I’m glad none of the societal expectations truly hurt Furukura and tear her down — she always embraced who she was and when she tried something different, learned it wasn’t her, and returned to how she is.
Great, short read overall. I recommend for neurotypical people to get a better idea of what neurodivergent people go through and showing that neurodivergent people can thrive in certain environments and they should be allowed to do so without judgement. Great commentary on society even outside of Japan. Just goes to show at the end of the day, we are all human and society at large can sometimes suck regardless of culture, country, or language.

There’s plenty of verbal abuse from people towards Furukura that may be triggering.
Shiraha’s an incel.

Keiko isn’t exactly normal. It’s very interesting seeing life from her perspective and the way “society” is described as is pretty true.
She’s probably psychopathic
Honestly I was uncomfortable reading this at times, but it was a cool book too.
And then there’s the incel ass character lmaoo

The main character's struggles are very relatable for me, as someone who's neurodivergent.
Minor: Misogyny
Other people treat the main character like she needs to be cured. But in the end she finds her own happiness.
