This book felt like it couldn't decide if it was a cozy mystery or a high stakes fantasy.
For a lot of it, I could forget the underlying murder plot, but when the stakes get raised, people have their skin being melted off. I also did not care about this couple. They didn't really have chemistry and were just a hot guy and a girl.
There were also a bunch of loose ends that were never tied up. Including the literal main plot! It makes me not want to read the next one because the author couldn't write a complete plot in over 400 pages.
Not only do we finish this book with no idea what has happened to the Villian. But we also don't know what was up with her mom besides the fact that she is alive somewhere, and it seemed like her dad wasn't telling the whole truth. The reason that the Villian and the King have this murderous feud was also underwhelming. It's the equivalent of an English teacher telling you you can't write, so you become an author, but it's an author that murders your critics.

Overall, I just didn't care about these characters and I wasn't invested in their story. Everything was just okay. I was never on the edge of my seat or needing to turn the next page.
It was fine. Not great. Not the worst thing.

Such a cozy fun read! The characters were so lovable and relatable. I’m a sucker for a slow burn and this one is going to be worth it lol the banter is on point and I love the mixed POV. This will be a consistent reread for sure. Loved everything about it!

It be easy to say this is enemies to lovers or sunshine/moody or call it a coworker romance but it really isn’t. The romance is there sure but reading this(while I SO wanted to see them together) I also wanted to see how they interacted with everyone else and see how they realize their feelings. It was more like a romcom where the main characters are more afraid of their feelings than they are oblivious. Over the story was great, awesome fantasy elements, cute humor and all and all a solid read. Sometimes it felt like big reveals weren’t explained enough but that is also a bit of a personal preference. I am also now truly a victim of the book as I torturously wait for the sequel in August.

I really enjoyed the characters and found the premise fun. The story did drag a little in places but not terribly. I was disappointed that the end left of the type of cliffhanger that makes it feel unfinished rather than arcing into the next book (that is, I do think it should have ended in a way that felt more like it could stand on its own), but I'd already liked it enough to buy the second book anyway and do look forward to the next arc.
