Прочитала первый рассказ, не понравилось, как он выстроен. Завязка интригует, но потом всё плоско. Больше читать не хочется.
I am in awe, again, of her genius.
One of the great uses I could see for VR technology is to foster empathy by allowing us to experience others' lives and realities. With Lessing, we're already there, thanks to an amazing ability to bring you right into the world of her characters and let you see through the lens of their experiences.
Extraordinary story ideas, no shyness at exploring taboos, and a rich, lush, multi-sensory journey in all four novellas.

But these lives were easy. Not many people in the world have lives so pleasant, unproblematical, unreflecting: no one on these blessed coasts lay awake and wept for their sins, or for money, let alone for food. What a good-looking lot, smooth and shiny with sun, with sport, with good food. Few people anywhere know of coasts like these, except perhaps for brief holidays, or in travellers’ tales like dreams. Sun and sea, sea and sun, and always the sound of waves on beaches.

I only read The Grandmothers but I loved it, I might have to read the other stories soon.

This edition of Adoration is actually a compilation of f our short stories; Adoration, Victoria and the Staveneys, The Reason For It, and A Love Child. Having not paid that much attention to the blurb on the back that said there were other novellas in this edition, I was a bit surprised when I powered through Adoration (previously published as The Grandmothers) in one sitting. My overall rating for this compilation is 4 stars. Separately, I rated Adoration and Victoria and the Staveneys as 5 stars each, and The Reason For It and A Love Child 4 stars each.
Adoration was a beautiful little novella, filled with passion. Victoria and The Staveneys was similarly written with passion and longing. I wasn't too impressed with The Reason For It, and felt that A Love Child dragged a little. There is no arguing that Doris Lessing is a great author, and her writing style was consistent throughout all four novellas, with beautiful descriptions and excellent flow.

I think I've decided that I do not fit Lessing's audience. These were very weird stories. The grandmothers in the first tale are outliers, strange, not likable, non conforming. I read two more, didn't finish the fourth story. I did like the dystopian The Reason For It, because it harkens to the tension that always exists between generations, and what can come of it. In the end, maybe bits and pieces of these stories will stay with me, but not as a whole. Seemed like an odd compilation.
Short stories, didn’t feel like finishing the last two as the first ones were not very light to read
I love The Grandmothers. I only re-read this story and skipped the others, but I've enjoyed them previously.
There is nothing I hate more than just giving up halfway through a book, but I couldn't take this one any longer. I also don't like writing a review for a book I didn't finish, but I feel that since I didn't finish it, people should know why, so they can avoid this awfulness.
The book is made up of 4 short stories, of which I read 2 1/2. The first story, The Grandmothers, was ridiculous. Two women who've been best friends for life start having a sexual relationship with the others son, and both are OK with it...very disturbing. And the writing style is so annoying, very dramatic and theatrical-like.
The second story, Victoria and The Staveneys, was very unbelievable as well. A little black girl goes home with Edward Staveney one day after school, is in awe of their huge home, and for the next 10 yrs thinks of nothing else. She then at the age of 19 gets pregnant by his brother Thomas but doesn't tell him for 6 yrs, and once she does, they lavish the little girl with all the perks of the good life, while Victoria slowly loses her daughter.
And the third story, The Reason For It, is where I finally threw in the towel. What's it about? I haven't a clue. It was absolutely painful to sit there and try to force myself to read this drivel. In the end, as you can guess, I do NOT recommend this book. I'm not sure about the author, maybe some of her other novels are better, who knows, I'm not going to find out though. If you see this book anywhere, keep walking and don't waste your time.
