Raw. Reads like journal entries pulled from a deeply tumultuous time in author’s life. Refreshing honesty and unsanitized exploration of identity in a post-colonial society.

This book takes on colonialism. It has a bit of auto fiction, and lot of edge to it. I loved it. Gabriela reconciles to being related to people who were essentially colonialists but she is also part of the colonized segment as well, so she sits on both sides of the issue. We also follow her love life, which is very liberal and messy. I just ate this up, it was sooo good. There were many scenes of a sexual explicit nature. Which I did not mind, but I find it funny that the booker judges always seem okay with spicy gay scenes between women but not between men. It would seem that the prize has some antiquated views as well that have to do with the male gaze. Anyway, this is a great novel, read it. I give this one a 5/5.
