A haunting, apocalyptic story set in Northern Ontario where the power, internet, and phones all go down on a reservation and the community must come together to support each other through a difficult winter. The imagery in this book transported me to this community and I could totally envision it being made into a movie/series.

A great, slow moving thriller that takes a realistic look at what would happen if the power and internet cut out, and the creeping dread that accompanies desperate survivors, while still having an uplifting, hopeful ending.

Overall - despite 3.75 stars, I liked this book and would recommend. I read it as part of a club, and liked the themes of how to confront a crisis like this in our age.
This community has advantages to being small and isolated, but it doesn’t eliminate natural challenges that would arise. The central conflict in the story is a valid and possible one in any community that potentially was in this situation, even if in a rural, non-first nation community.
I liked rice’s attempt here and will still try his sequel
