This was a buddy read which honestly made the experience of this book even more fun with the twists and turns of this exciting plot.
It’s most definitely a book written for teens, with a very Pretty Little Liars vibe to it - but so many more layers. The plot wasn’t exactly what I was expecting - the tagline on the cover I found was “five girls lied, five girls died”,  I assumed it would be a cover-up of a crime over the summer. But the actual story was just as satisfying and enjoyable. The overall concept is that five girls die within months of each other; two in an accident, two murdered and one suicide. It is up to the sister of one of the girls to uncover why her sister would (or how she could) commit suicide, and who is actually behind the murder of the two friends.
The way the author writes is direct without being clunky and has a way of offering just enough information without feeling as though too much is being dumped at all. There are certain events that happen (without giving away spoilers) that are all clear without so much as saying “this is what happened and this is how she feels”.
Kara Thomas does so well when it comes to cliffhangers at the end of each chapter, always leaving the reader on edge, wanting to know what comes next. She includes levels of suspense that make her writing addictive and consuming, wanting to get to the next theory or piece together the next round of clues as soon as possible. It has been so much fun reading this, along with a friend, eagerly wanting more information to get to the bottom of the mystery that comes from the five deaths. There have been so many questions, so many potential suspects, an absolute rollercoaster of ranting and venting and excitedly trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. It was such a fun experience to share with someone else and I’m looking forward to delving into more of this author’s work in the future.

  • The tag line is 'Five girls lied. Five girls died." There was no lying. They just all kinda sucked, as teenagers sometimes do, and some were just victims of incredibly bad luck.
  • Main character always jumped to conclusions, which would have been okay except that the conclusions always turned out to be correct.
  • There were no consequences for bad decisions the main character made. She was putting herself in unsafe situations all the time but it always turned out to be fine.
  • The mystery was boring. It was just going around texting and talking to people. The characters in the flashbacks felt like clones of the characters in the present.
  • I had pretty much figured who the murderer was going to be because their other connection to the story had to converge with the murder plot somehow, and this seemed the most likely.
  • This isn't a complaint with the book, but the MC's last name was Wrayburn (not sure if the same spelling as I use, as I listened to the audio book) and that took me by surprise every time I heard it. I'm the only Wrayburn I know.

I liked this book more than the sequel. While I found this book predictable, I liked the pacing.
