This took me right back to the summer on 1989. The days when the family watched the one and only television in the house together, and a Viennetta Icecream cake was a fancy dessert you brought out for guests. (Do they still sell these? I've got the taste for one now.)
Tracie Reed has gone missing and there's clues that it could be satanic cults behind it. I had expected this to be a tad scary, having not read a Christian White book before (although his first two come highly recommended and are both sitting on my TBR pile). It wasn't. Instead it was an insight into what it actually might be like in your own neighbourhood if a girl went missing. Neighbourhood gossip, a community that sets out to do something to protect their own families from who they perceive is the guilty party, and lots of secrets going on behind closed doors.
I loved it. A definite five stars from me. And those Christian Whites on my TBR pile just got bumped to the top.

Wild Place is the 3rd novel by best selling Aussie author and screenwriter, Christian White (he co-created Nextflix's Clickbait) and it certainly delivered on what I have come to expect (& love) of his effortlessly deceptive writing style.

Set in Australian suburbia during the Summer of 1989 and at the height of the Satanic Panic, school teacher Tom Witter becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of his past student, 17-year-old Tracie Reed.

What the Police initially dismissed as a runaway case, has Tom convinced is something more sinister. With fear and accusations running high, Tom soon has the residents of Keel Street in a panic over rumours that Tracie may have been victim to a satanic ritual, and that one of their own is at the centre of it all.

Christian's character and setting depictions and well thought out plot make for a compulsive read. Dark secrets and consequences, coupled together with a few baity twists to keep you on your toes, before delivering on that final WTF moment.... 🤯

I will say though, after reading the author's notes and acknowledgement at the end of the book, I really understood what this book could have been and a part of me can't help but wonder 🤔.

This is the first book I've read by Christian White... I wanted to read it so much I ordered it from Australia as its not available in the UK.
I was not dissatisfied, this is a brilliantly written, easy read, the story of a family and community in 1989/1990 small-town Australia, secrets and lies and how our actions have consequences....I did not see the twists coming, so got blindsided and that makes this an excellent book ! Thrilling, gripping, easy to read and one that should be on your to be read list!
