First half is great. Second is not.
Up until the author starts speaking in first person, this is a great book. The second half is long winded, dry, and tedious to get through. Desperately needed good editing.

I really enjoyed this book. Even though the crimes committed by the Manson Family are gruesome and horrible, it was still fascinating to read about Manson, his philosophy and how he controlled the members of the family. In my opinion Vincent Bugliosi has managed to portray the murders, murderers, Family members and trials etc. in a neutral way.
A really fascinating and in-depth look at the Manson family, the murders they committed, and the subsequent investigation and trial. Bugliosi is straight-talking and clear on all points, and it's a fabulous insight into what a prosecutor's role entails.
The only downside is that there is *so* much information thrown at the reader that it's a little hard to keep track of everything!
Audiobook highly recommended.

it was a lot drier and more about the law aspects than i had anticipated but nevertheless a good read
“You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy.”
I read Helter Skelter many years ago and so wanted to begin my year with a reread of it. This book is written by the prosecuting attorney Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry. It is said to be an insiders look at the infamous trial. Charles Manson and the members of his Family were put on trial after the brutal Tate and La Bianca murders in Los Angeles.
This book executes very well a thoroughly investigated history on the biggest trial that America and the world witnessed back in the 1970s. Not a single detail is left out. The book gives appropriate background on the persons involved as well as several interlinking leads during the trial. There are so many details important to the case which time has forgotten and this book casts a light on these details. Even though I knew what information to expect it still shocked me the second time round and also the fact that this case is real is one which adds the horror to this harrowing read.
As the reader you aren’t just eyes of Bugliosi’s but also the judge, jury, the Family and Manson himself. There are intimate details shared which shed some light on motive and reality of life within the Manson Family. Their common goal is explained and also Manson’s hold over the members of this group of devotees. What baffled me before and still does now is how the justice system handled the cases of the Tate and La Bianca murders, given the time and the advance in investigative techniques it surprised me at how little importance was given on crucial evidence.
This book has been described as one of the best true crime novels out there and this for me is most definitely true. You think you know everything about this case but just a few pages in you realise that is not true. The story goes beyond the Tate and La Bianca murders. So many more lives were claimed by the Family and these are also discussed.
All in all an excellent true crime novel which I highly and always recommend.

So they actually don't get into the trail till about 15 hours into the 26 hour long audio book. Although it is so long the story is so crazy and so grasping that it held my attention pretty much the whole time and i was always trying to find find to listen to more.
Hearing more about the back story about the gruesome murders and the man who ordered the murders to occur.
Bugliosi seems like a he was a great guy and an honest, truth seeking attorney.
