I didn't know anything of the Manson murders, I knew who he was, but other than that nada. I went in fresh and holy crap this book chilled me. I'm fascinated by true crime, if you are also, this is a must read.

It's not until you read this incredible story that you really understand how incredibly insane, powerful, and manipulative Charles Manson was. It's not difficult to understand how his life went off-track given his mostly unloving childhood. He was a lost soul by the time he was in his mid-20s. Many of his followers were lost souls as well.

The book reads mostly like the pages from a hard-nose detective's notebook on a difficult case. Vincent Bugliosi offers amazing details of the crime scene, suspect interviews, courtroom drama, and of course his own reflections on the whole ordeal. Mr. Bugliosi also provides a lot of interesting insights into how police have to gather evidence, and how difficult it can be to put together an air-tight case against someone. Mr. Bugliosi also shows that even lawyers themselves can cause trouble by not keeping key court testimony out of reporters' ears, or just yelling "objection" at every little thing the other side says. Absolutely amazing book.

Well written...the crime of the 0th century

Mr. Vigorous left no stone unturned during his prosecution of Charles Manson, nor in writing his perspective. As a reader obsessed with Fatal Vision, (the murders of the McDonald family by Dr. Jeffrey McDonald...he blamed 'drug crazed hippies' and committed a copycat crime)--I had never read Helter Skelter. I am now very glad I did. My appetite for true crime reading continues

Really detailed account of the murders and the trials. Bugliosi also has a good writing style, with some humorous remarks here and there. A good read!

Pretty in depth as it’s the prosecutor who did this book. A good one for those who want to know more about what Manson did without making him to be something more than he was.

FINALLLY

It took me over a year to finish this thing for two reasons:

1.) I don’t know how interested I am in the investigative lawyering parts of the story. I didn’t know I wasn’t interested in that until I was up to my neck in it and it bogged me down.

2.) Charles Manson freaks me out. Like, I’d be fine. He would do or say something, and then I would NOPE the eff out for six months and hope I don’t have nightmares.

But yeah. 5 stars.

Really great, in-depth perspective on how a legal case is actually built and presented.
