I never tired of this book. In many other true crime books that are this length, I get anxious to be done but this was both thorough and totally captivating.
I had been meaning to read this book for a while. The library never had it, so I finally bought it from a local bookstore. In reading the book, I found out a few things. The police really needed to communicate, like things would have been solved faster. I never realized before, but the reason for the "Pig," "Death To Pigs" were put there to try to blame the Black Panthers. I didn't really put these two things in the same time period. This book/ the story of Manson, can get really in your head. I had some weird dreams about living in the 60's and then being shot in the chest. There were times where it felt really fantastical. I had to keep reminding myself, that this intact is a true story, and it did happen, and it is not just a horrible fictional tale. In a way it was a comfort to remind myself to this, because it meant that I knew these horrible people are in prison and will die in there. there were times where I actually thought that the murders would get away with it. It amazed me how often they were allowed to change their lawyers so often, I mean I know everyone has the right to council, but how? I kind of found Manson's testimony mesmerizing. I can completely see how he was able to control people. Also, why is it that all of the hard criminals become born again Christians when they get in prison. Because basically everyone but Squeaky and Mary Brunner, got married and found Jesus. Before reading this book, I had a tiny amount of sympathy for the 3 girls beaus in their TV interview they sounded very regretful. But after reading this, I don't feel any sort of sympathy because it became apparent that they really didn't care. This book was wild and very interesting, with the exception of the Epilouge, which was a bit slow. I am glad I finally got to read this. I would recommend this for all true crime lovers.
An excellent, chilling, exhaustive account of the Manson family murders and the ensuing investigation and trial. In my younger days, I was much more fascinated with true crime (Fatal Vision by Joe McGuinness was a particular favorite), but for some reason, this particular book eluded me. I was visiting friends in Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago and saw the book in their guest room. I took the book off the shelf and read about 100 pages before finally shutting off the light.
The first section, about the murders, was scary and creepy and I couldn't put it down. The investigation section is highly detailed - almost to the point where it drags down the book a bit, but it's all essential information, so I didn't mind much. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about Manson's upbringing.
The trial section is almost to weird to be believed. I can't believe some of the defense tactics, not to mention the general behavior of Manson and his devotees.
Bugliosi did an excellent job. This is how true crime books should be written.

I thought this book was quite interesting. Recently, I've been on a true crime kick. This book contained everything for a true crime junkie.

After reading this book I have so much respect and admiration for this author/prosecutor. The detailed and honest account he gave of them crimes, the victims, the killers and court case was very interesting and chilling.
Interesting and bits I was shocked and engrossed by but just entirely too long and not for me
