The writing is really excellent. It's not a very exciting book but it's so well done. The 4 main characters are so well drawn.

This was my first book authored by Henry James and I was impressed.
He managed to turn a small family drama into a whole novel, although it is a short story, and give it a somewhat interesting plot.
I quite liked the stylistic choice of addressing the reader directly multiple times throughout the story. Still, I was sometimes confused by his very over-the-top and complicated sentences that seemed very Austen-like.
All in all, it is a nice short story that is very dramatic and sarcastic to read.

I am obliged to say that the movie "The Heiress", based on this story had a much more satisfying ending.
I kept telling myself to read this book slower, to really experience the language and the quietness of Catherine's life. Twice now, I have read this book, and both times read it too quickly. I feel it is there for me to more fully appreciate, if only I would be a more patient reader.

Nowhere as good as the movie based on it, The Heiress. The characters lack depth, there is no mystery as to the motives of Townsend, and all subtlety is lost. The story had potential, as The Heiress shows, but nothing in the book would compel the reader in any way.
This a quick, fast-paced read full of drama. Dr. Sloper, Aunt Lavinia, and Morris are all the worst! Poor Catherine! I wish she could have gotten over Morris and found new love, but if she didn’t I am very down with her never forgiving him and telling him to leave and never come back after what he put her through! And the cool way she did it rather than showing any emotion - bad ass. A woman after my own heart - forget but never forgive
