Seven Faceless Saints

3.5 AVERAGE

Post fake state news: I dont think Lobb supports it, but the fact her writing is eerily similar to Maas I did compare the two. But on second thought, this book was WAY better than ToG. Fuck that book

" Let's say I read this first as a teen. If I wasn't exposed to different types of media, tropes, and character dynamics, I might have said this book was the perfect edginess for me.

Now that said, as an adult, this book was hot edgy garbage. It had way more edgy darkness than "One Dark Window", but I couldn't praise this book for much else.

Rosana made me keep thinking of "Friends" because they kept nicknaming Rozana as "Roz" and then I couldn't take it seriously. She also has a problem of going to horny jail like every other second even though she also could die at any possible second. For example, she sneaks around the Platzo and all she can think of is running her hands down Damien's chest. Bitch weren't you pissed off at him like 3 chapters ago, when the fuck did these feelings seemingly crop outta nowhere? The horniess kept this book's vibe derailing and at that point, couldn't take it seriously and just imagined this as a B rated Netflix series.

All of the characters were one noted and not as deep besides Damien who is probably the most multifaceted of this whole entire book, but that's not saying much. We only get that he has PTSD, struggling through sift his emotions after the war, paralling what troops of various nations go through after they seen war and lived to tell the tale. But we don't get much else out of him. He has a dead mom, but again, that's about it.

And don't get me started on Rozana switching her emotions every single second. She was a hot volatile mess, and I couldn't blame her, but her reasoning made it hard to follow her logic.

The prose kept trying to mimick Maas, which I don't care about, but if you like Maas, this might be gold for you.

(view spoiler)

The way Rozana kept preaching that Saints are shit and religion is hogwash was very on the nose with atheism in general and felt it could have done way better than just copy and pasting Twitter posts.

All in all, I think this book taught me a lot. I am not made for YA if there is a romance tag in GR, so I will have to steer away from it, no matter how beautiful the cover is. And that covers mean diddly squat when picking up a book. (I should have known but I'm a magpie, bitch)

So who should read this book? Read this book if you're a YA, not an adult. If you're an adult reading this, don't say I didn't warn you, but if you're in the ages of 14-18, this might not be a bad introduction to edgy, dark books.

2/5 "

I lost all interested in the end. It was a slippery slope that concave down. It started so good, and then we HAD to have cheesy romance. And besides the big omg love, everything else is so shallow like a rain puddle on Sahara. Yes, I'm bitter and salty and all the tastes, but I was lured to fantasy murder mystery and got romance sludge.

I'm here wanting to know about chaos, death saints, and a murder investigation. Meanwhile the book wants to have a love story. Switching characters adds nothing and they significant overlap ideas. Their opposing viewpoints don't really come to a head in a meaningful way, it's more like capitulation after one is forcibly shown something. If this had one viewpoint, no romance, and explored powers, saints and this world, it would have been great. Instead there's maybe 20 pages of substance and the rest is dialogue that doesn't interest me and a love story I don't care about.

It’s fine. A little forgettable. But it’s not bad.
