Two regions at war fight over dwindling resources within a society that worships seven saints. After a series of strange murders, a young woman with magical abilities agrees to work with her former lover to find answers to the crimes.

I had a hard time with the writing style so I just couldn't focus on the story. I tried many times but something about it just pushed me away. It will probably be different for other people.

Thank you to Little Brown Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

This was super good! Lobb's debut really knocks it out of the park. I loved the world and the characters and was immediately sucked into this rich prose. Once I started, I couldn't put it down! I need book two ASAP!

Damian Venturi I would give up my firstborn for you, just say the word.

For a debut novel, this book is fantastic.
The world-building is pretty well done, so it doesn't feel overwhelming, and I loved the characters and their dynamics.
The first few chapters were a bit slow to me, but after that, oh boy.

Damian truly is such a complex character, and I love how greatly explained his trauma from war is, how he deals with the weight of the war, and how much his father sucks. He tries to see the best in people (sometimes to a fault) and don't get me started on his love for Roz.

The way Roz made him feel, he thought, might be the closest thing he ever found to proof of the divine. […]
She was holier than any saint. If she let him, he might just make her his new religion.
