This was SO good!!! I love epistolary novels, and this scratched an itch that I have been having. This book could have gone two ways with its execution: poorly or amazingly, and I am happy to say that this book accomplished the second one. It’s hard to read a compelling story with limited letters but this pulled it off without it feeling too “gimmicky.” Humorous where it needs to be, but also doesn’t skimp out on serious depth of this intense situations A very beginner friendly gateway into dystopian/political fiction books that it easy to grasp but still impactful. I’m so glad I brought up this book to my book club and am very excited to hear the others thoughts on it!!!

What an intriguing read! Did I have a hard time reading as more letters were lost yes lol, but I enjoyed it none the less. I have never read a book like this before and appreciated how the different structure and writing style translated to the story. I was pulled in by the characters and was worried about them each step of the way. Mark Dunn easily depicts the different ways humans respond to these kind of events, and even gives empathy to those who have done wrong before. It felt like Dunn was making a commentary in an approachable and quiet way. I stay engaged the whole way and started thinking about how I would respond if I was put in this situation.

I think the only fault I found is that I wish we had more time with some of the characters. I think there could have been a deeper delve into characters psyches, especially as they went through all the plot points of the story. I would love to hear more about how limiting ones language effects ones thought process and emotions!

This won't go down as my favorite book of all time but I would recommend as a quick, interesting read that touches on fighting power collectively and not allowing anyone to silence us. I will say this quote hit me and reminds me to not wait until the problem is not at my door to fight oppression, "Our repulsion, you see, will not spur us to revolt until this plague moves much closer to home."

Cute, but pretentious.
