An unexpected dystopian masterpiece. What a challenge for an author to limit himself to pages upon pages using less and less letters.

Ella Minnow Pea shows just how swiftly totalitarianism can take hold; a small change here and a seemingly insignificant law there, and before you know it, your entire world has changed.

Absolutely appreciate the conclusive ending.

This was definitely a funny read, it was quick to get through because it's so short, however I found myself skipping over some lines because it was so drawn out. The point of the novel was that these people on this island were extremely intelligent with literature and language, but dang, it made me feel dumb sometimes. Also I didn't fall in love with any characters, which is usually important to me.

This is an interesting look at the English alphabet and language. It's a quick read, but the story is pretty compelling considering the length and subject matter. It is rather silly, but it makes it fun if you don't take it too seriously.

this book is incredible. the way the author explores the use of language, words, and sounds in this little society is brilliant. this is a book i’d recommend forever, it’s so important to learn about the harmful effects of censorship even when it as extreme as this tale.

A unique concept and surprisingly enjoyable, even more so as the book progressed and less letters were available. I took frequent breaks but that was easy considering the story is told via mail/letters. Originally I thought the plot would be separate from the concept (removing a letter from the alphabet each chapter). I was originally annoyed when it wasn't as it made the characters and plot frustrating. However, it proved to add to the challenge, making it a more impressive read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and understand it is not for everyone. However if you have a particular love for words than I highly recommend it. I consider it an art piece.

This epistolary novel was so original, thoughtful and comments so well on society and government as a whole without being preachy. Because everything was written in letters, I did get rather confused as to which character was saying what, but the leaving behind of the letters, and the creativity on the author's part of writing an entire story without all of the letters of the alphabet, was genius. I actually thought it was an awesome social commentary as well, about the arbitrariness (is that a word??) of government. Recommend!
