A very clever book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It can be enjoyed on a number of levels; firstly the phonetic and alphabetical contortions into which each letter is ultimately forced, and second, in its sociopolitical commentary.

What a neat book! I love telling people about it. The story takes place in Nollopville, a fictional island off the coast of the US, that was named after Nevin Nollop, the person who penned the pangram “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” On the island, there is a statue of Nollop with this sentence written on it. One day, the letter Z falls off which allows the high council to decree that from beyond the grave, Nollop wishes them to stop using the letter Z altogether. Then more letters start falling!
The book is written in letter format between characters and there are less and less letters used in them as the book progresses. The language in the letters was relaxing to read. (the characters took pride in their refined way of speaking). Every letter had such interesting words included and had great flow (until there were so many letters gone that that would be impossible). I wish I naturally wrote and spoke like that all the time. It was so clever how the author adapted the letters to the increasing restrictions of the high council. I highly recommend this book; such a cool idea! It is now one of my favourites. 5 stars.

At just over 200 pages you could read this in an evening. I came across this on tumblr like 10 years ago and am finally reading it. This is such an interesting concept. I thought it was going to be just a silly book playing with words. This was a lot more serious. It was about the problems with totalitarian regimes and how they eventually come for everyone. Kind of a bit rough to read in the current climate. But besides that it was a beautiful experiment with language and how much you can do with so little. Very creative.
