Like many non-fiction books, much repetition. Interesting that sensitivity is a good trait in leaders but is something that is frowned upon/laughed at -being in tune with your feelings.
I have never really given thought to the characteristics of a narcissist but the explanation of their traits has given me thought that a friend definitely has those qualities so definitely something to be aware of.

It is unclear to me what the author’s expertise is and if she’s qualified.

This book is very validating and contains some useful tools for HSPs but I found it a bit repetitive.

I was hoping this book would explore the impact of capitalism on HSPs, especially since overstimulation and capitalism are very much linked. Not taking the systems we live under into account while discussing sensitivity is a huge lost opportunity in my opinion. As far as I remember, politics were only mentioned once in this book (it did take me a long time to read it so please take this part of my review with a pinch of salt). Our mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. There’s a reason sensitivity is seen as a weakness in our society but unfortunately that wasn’t really explored in this book.

Sensitive is a fantastic addition to the genre of non-fiction books focusing on the highly sensitive person (HSP), first identified by Elain Aron. Sensitive combines the research, insights, and readability of the books of Elaine Aron (HSP series) and Susan Cain ('Quiet'). This would be a great place to start for learning about highly sensitive persons, whether you are one or just want to learn about it. I found it incredibly insightful and enlightening.

So many aspects of my temperament and preferences just make sense when I read this book. I often struggle with overstimulation, so I was happy to see an entire chapter devoted on management, both on prevention and short-term recovery from it. I think that's something often lacking in this genre of books. Highly recommend if you're an HSP or looking to understand them better.

Thank you to NetGalley and Rodale/Harmony for providing this ARC.

This book was given to me by a very dear friend and it made me feel SEEN.

It offers a very inspiring and empowering perspective of sensitivity and how we, as a society, frown upon a personality trait that can be so valuable. The world just isn't built to accommodate for highly sensitive people and the fact that a huge part of us goes misunderstood, contributes for a never ending feeling of being misplaced or broken somehow - but this book debunks a lot of toxic ideas around sensitivity, even celebrates it. I found the empathy section particularly interesting.

The sensitive mind spends more time processing everything, wether it's a bright overhead light, a child's smile, or a new scientific theory. In turn, sensitivity shows itself in different ways: a deep thoughtful intelligence and a profound, empathetic awareness of people.
