Call it overuse of the source material in the modern age, call it overly predictable, Romeo and Juliet is not my cup of tea. The premise is somewhat based in reality, sure. I'm sure we've all met at least one teenage couple that wants to run away together, damn the circumstances or realities of their respective backgrounds. As a bystander, you cannot help but feel bad for these kids and question their every short-sighted, undercalculated move. This is the same exact feeling that I get from reading Romeo and Juliet. Sure, there is witty writing, sure the premise is somewhat sound. None of this matters to me as the two main characters are so unbelievably underwhelming and frustrating to read. And, when the end of the story rolls around, is there a satisfying ending? No! Of course not! If someone bothered to, I don't know, check a pulse or for some respiratory function this all could have been avoided. At this point, instead of coming to your senses and thinking "You know, life is long and I'm sure I'll meet someone later" , you know what our harrowing hero does? The most illogical thing possible, killing himself, completely ruining any sort of satisfying end for the audience.

Hard to understand most of what is said, but after being told I am still trying to work out why Shakespeare would write a play like this setting it for two adolescents to want to get married a DAY after they first even saw each other. But like everyone else I had to read this for English Literature. The film of this on the cover was good though!

When I first read this book (circa 2023) I wasn’t aware of the death of main characters, even though it’s written of the first page of this novel. I believe that the story had a great impact on me. It’s an easy read, a total classic. I will be going back to this book every once in a while.
I knew that at some point I had to read this. Conveniently coming accross a beautiful edition of this at Shaekespeare and Company in Paris I thought it was a sign that the time had come. I found the language challenging in the beginning but by the end it felt comforting and poetic and had a rhythm of its own. I also thought I knew the story in general terms but I was unaware of some interesting twists and intricacies of the plot.
Somebody hand me a bucket.
What a truly awful book, right down there with the terrible Pride and Prejudice.
