Potential unpopular opinion: I preferred the tv series!

After I picked this book up I couldn’t put it down. As I read this book I think I felt every emotion known to man in all honesty.

I felt like I was rooting for Connell and Marianne while at the same time not really knowing what I was rooting for. This discussion of power dynamics was really beautifully done.

But
i have never read a book that ended so abruptly and i think i love it?

Honestly I did struggle with the dialogue not being in quotation marks...but I did adjust!!!

I expected to cry, to be moved. Was left feeling overall lukewarm about everything and everyone. These don't feel like the people I would want to be around, normally.

When people said this book was sad, I expected it to be in a gutwrenching way but it was more sad in a sorry way. Life just sucks sometimes--our circumstances, our minds--and we have to keep moving anyways. I think how annoyed I felt at this book at times is a testament to how real it is. I kept yelling at the Marianne and Connell to "JUST COMMUNICATE!!" but let's be real, I'm no different. What I love the most about this book is that the resolution of the book wasn't necessarily the ending, it was the realization I had about myself a few hours later.

I read this for a uni class and I can tell for the most part this is a ‘love it or hate it’ kind of book.
I think if the themes and experiences of the characters hit home for you, you will be much more invested and affected by the book. If not it seems people come away very unbothered about the story.
Personally some of Marianne’s story really hit home and I could really empathise with her, despite her overwhelming flaws, so I enjoyed the book in a sort of self-therapising way. Whereas I know people who found her annoying when they read the story.

This review is all over the place but it's hard for me to give an overview because the novel doesn't really lead anywhere or have a ‘true meaning’ if that makes sense.
