Hit me like a ton of bricks. It's probably not for everyone, but it really resonated with me.

PS. I found the blurb to be misleading/non-representative of the vibe of the book, best ignore it.

This book... was something. The writing was real good, but perhaps the themes were just not my thing. It made me long for college in the stupid mid-covid zoomester. It's the characters for me. They had a whole lot of issues and while it was clear that together they found a semblance of sanity and a safe port always available... I thought it was very much dependant and all around not good in the long term. Finally, open endings and on and off relationships are just not my thing. Malvaez if you read my review, know that I only finished it because you said you liked it.

"She has never believed herself fit to be loved by any person. But now she has a new life, of which this is the first moment, and even after many years have passed she will still think: Yes, that was it, the beginning of my life."

This is a fascinating book with fascinating characters. I don't usually read books this fast, but its fast pace and intriguing atmosphere pulled me right in. Connell and Marianne are some of the most interesting characters I've ever read, and I love how flawed they are. It isn't clear who is good or bad, or who the reader should sympathize with. I don't think I've ever read about such a deep relationship.
I gave this book 4 stars because although it is really good, it doesn't really align with my tastes. I found myself searching for some glimmer of hope for the two of them, and although it appears sometimes, it didn't show up as much as I would like. So this book was very interesting, but ultimately kind of depressing (and not in a good way). I think that's the point, but for me it wasn't my cup of tea.
