Read in one sitting. Whoever Toby the therapist was, I hope they found another career. Such tense sections with him. Very interesting take on DID.

Woof.
This giant bad boy details Grove’s discovery of their dissociative identity disorder as they try to get hormone treatment to transition into a woman. That sounds “easy” enough but Grove chose to write this book as inner and external dialogue between them and their therapist. And that, was ROUGH!!
Toby.....man.....he admitted that he probably wasn’t capable of treating Grove and boy howdy he wasn’t. As I read this book, I kept trying to figure out if Toby was right in calling Katina on her stuff but once Grove went to another therapist, it really clarified how wrong Toby was. I can’t believe Grove went through 6 months of this “treatment” but then, the way they had been marginalized, it makes sense. And Grove didn’t know they had D.I.D. So maybe Toby did a good job? But it was so hard to read and, I’m sure, 10,000 times harder to live.
After reading this, I wonder if Grove will recant some of this work as they uncover more memories. It seems there have been some works that were found to be fraudulent (ex. Sybil, Go Ask Alice) but I don’t think Grove wrote this to swindle anyone or make themselves seem important. I think they wrote this to try and piece together this very trying time in their lives. Grove said as much in their afterward.
If you are interested in D.I.D., I don’t think you will find a better source of someone’s experience. Maybe there is one but after reading this, and the difficulty of this read, I’m fine to skip. I removed a few from my queue.
