12-year-old misfit Ambrose almost died the day three bullies snuck a peanut inside of his sandwich at lunch. After that, his overprotective mom decides he should start correspondence school and soon he gets bored. So, he talks his neighbor, recovering addict and ex-con into taking him to Scrabble Club!

Funny and endearing, this is a story about understanding and compromise; grief and recovery. On a related note, I just started reading Stefan Fatsis' Word Freak and found the world of Scrabble he describes sounds a lot like the world in this book.

Loved it. Especially loved how unselfconscious Ambrose was - right on, Purple Cords!

A book about a 12-year-old boy that promotes reading and the love of words. I read it because a boy of approximately that age said it was good.

Bullied by boys at school, lonely, and overprotected by his widowed mother, 12-year-old Ambrose finds solace and acceptance in the Scrabble Club in this coming-of-age story. Hilarious and heartwarming, but this book probably should have been shelved with the Young Adult materials, although more mature children would probably love it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever felt socially awkward.

Brilliant. I loved Cosmo's shady past, Ambrose's quirkiness, Irene's overprotectiveness and of course, Mrs. E's food.

This book kept me glued to it and I was done in two sittings, craving more Susin Nielsen. This is definitely one of the books that I would love to read again. Not only was the plot great, the characters were so real. Truly was one of the books that I felt I had slipped into. Recommend it to everyone, it's two hours well spent.

It's not every YA book that quotes copiously from Luther Wright & the Wrongs...

...or uses the word 'boobs' so much. But it is from the POV of a 12 year old boy, so I'd guess that's fairly realistic.
