I just… did not care about anyone in this book, nor did i enjoy the writing style

An absolutely stunning and enthralling romance, as well as a scathing reproach of societal norms of its era, that transcends its characters’ time period as well as that of the time it was penned in, The Age of Innocence may be one of the finest novels I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I don’t doubt that this novel is one of the finest examples of command of a third person narrative that deftly moves the reader through a New York more distant and somehow just as now as ever. My heart would sputter and stop as frequently as Newland’s and Ellen’s. The New York-ness of this book! To decry change and wax nostalgic for an era one still lives in? To explain how critical it is to know what neighborhood one is in speaks to social and economic and political mobility? To witness an old fashioned man choose tradition and a preconceived notion of duty over love and adventure, and to carry the missed opportunity of an entire life upon his shoulders without bowing under the weight all the way to, presumably, the end of his days? I love this book. Read it, read it now, and read it again. I did.

Favorite quote? All of them. The one that is stuck to my ribs and throwing darts at my heart through the gaps?:

“She said she knew we were safe with you, and always would be, because once, when she asked you to, you’d given up the thing you most wanted.”
inspiring slow-paced

This book has an ok story but my god is it incredibly boring. The writing is just impossible to read unless you're looking for a sleeping pill. Hated it!

I am very sad.

*I read this in the Edith Wharton Omnibus. The Age of Innocence in this book is only 274 pages, so I picked an edition with a close page count.
