I loved and I hated this book. So engaging and well written but I wanted to smack Newland Archer upside the head at the end. This was a rare classic for me in that the ending wasn't ruined in any way. I really had no idea what was going to happen as I was reading, unlike Anna Karenina, because it's hard not to hear a reference to that train incident. I couldn't believe what happened, perhaps because I was expecting a more Austen-like plot. It's been awhile since I've been this pissed at a book, which is really a good thing. A good gender study and a good picture of the society of the time, though I did skim when the narration went on a little too much about the gossip of the people of the time. But in general, simple and engaging prose and interesting characters made this a very good read.
