To enjoy this book, you have to set aside plausibility. Hanna, the 7 year old antagonist, alternately sounds like an evil adult and a spoiled toddler. The mother is completely unlikable. She is selfish, self-absorbed, and immature.
I'm giving this a low rating mostly due to the amount of foul language and sexual scenes. However, this story is one I will ponder for some time to come. What does a parent do when their child is mentally ill and/or a psychopath?

This book was okay. Too on the nose; I don't need to know literally everything. I found the representation of Crohn's disease and Jewish and Swedish culture to be interesting. This is a fast read, very tense and exhausting though. I hope Hanna stays in that mental facility forever there's no hope for her I fear

This book took me quite awhile to actually get through. It's packed with so much detail, it's truly an immersive experience for a story that spans merely 314 pages.
I loved the alternating perspectives between Hanna and her mother, Suzette. The way that Zoje Stage was able to capture Hanna's childlike worldview was immaculate. To see each scenario from both an adult's and a child's perspective was magical.
It touches on the topic of mental health in a way that I haven't seen - and encapsulates it in a way that you almost feel as if you're reading the personal diaries of both the mother and the daughter, as they go through this struggle.
I would absolutely love to see what ends up happening to this family!! (maybe in another book??)
