A classic. As a young child, the musical was one of my favourite films, and I've seen it so many times I just knew I had to read the book.
I wasn't disappointed. It's a fantastic read, and I couldn't recommend it more. It's a lovely story with great characterisation and a satisfying conclusion.

Considering Oliver! Is one of my all time favourite films, I really did not enjoy this book so much. I powered through but the dialogue was so difficult for me to enjoy.
I’d say, I actually managed to enjoy maybe the last 20 or so pages.

Before I start this review, it should be noted that I had to read this for school and would not have picked this up on my own, so take my review with a grain of salt. I really enjoyed the first quarter of this book. After that, it felt a bit boring to me. It sounds odd to say it was boring, because so much was happening, but I just didn't really care about any of it. I feel as if there were too many characters to keep track of. and some of them could have been condensed into one character. I liked Oliver's character at first, I found him to be sweet and I really felt for him, but as the novel went on, I found him to be less and less realistic. The whole point was to showcase just how good Oliver Twist is in contrast to the harshness of society, but it might have been taken too far for me. Oliver just felt a bit too good to be true after a while. Other characters like Rose also made me feel that way. This is not a terrible book in my opinion, and I definitely see why it's a classic and why Dickens is such a classic author, but it also definitely wasn't for me.

To be honest, I don't understand the reverence for this book. Of course I empathize with Oliver and rejoice for him when all works out in the end. Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow are admirable figures. I don't undestand the pedestal for the Artful Dodger at all. He's hardly in the book in my opinion and has only one really significant scene when he's at the prison. Dickens has a well deserved reputation for writing about the social ills of the world. This book gives you plenty of that. In fairness, I was anxious to read the next book on my list when I started this and Oliver Twist is not a short book. It's possible I wasn't giving this book my full attention and as such did not enjoy it as much. I do not wish to warn anyone off about it. It's vintage Dickens and it was a good read. But for me, I probably wouldn't read it again.
