On a second listen I'm still heartbroken about Cardenia, but I think the ambiguous ending is great.
It's the third in a (well planned) trilogy, so in some ways this book is exactly what you expect. It builds on the previous two books, but gains seriousness. An interesting conclusion to a strong series.

Gotta love Kiva. Cried so much over Cardenia and Marce.

Effing Scalzi, man....
I was 20 pages from the end and still baffled as to how he was going to bring all the moving pieces to a satisfactory conclusion. So much so that I was actually feeling a lot of anxiety. Three books worth of palace intrigue, a literally physically collapsing empire, and no good way through any of it.
And he pulled it off.

First off I feel like I am emotionally compromised despite the fact that this trilogy is basically pop corn sci fi because I really got invested in the characters anyways. Nadashe makes a wonderful villain so it was fun to see what schemes she would come up with despite being routed in the last installment. Kiva was entertaining as she becomes more introspective about her nature despite the fact that she was previously so confident about who she is previously. Overall I'm happy with the way things ended even if it wasn't the ending that I had personally hoped for. I think the way things panned out made sense and I'm happy with my time spent in the universe.

I didn't think this series could be capped off satisfyingly in one book, but Scalzi pulled it off. I don't think it was quite as dramatic as the second book (which was a constant stream of "OMG WHAT?!", but it was still gripping. A few characters get fleshed out a bit more, but mostly this book just pushes plot. It also has one of the great one-liners, toward the end. :)
Still, I feel like this could have been a magnificent five-book series rather than a fantastic three-book series, you know? That's hardly a complaint, but it's the only criticism that I have, really. :)

If you liked TBR first two In this series you’ll definitely like the finale!
Good wrap-up to the trilogy. There are a few twists and reveals that I didn't see coming, and also at least one that I did, but probably only right when the author wanted me to (and it was just shortly before the characters did). The prose is nice and light but also has moments of tension in it, and the characters that I loved from the first two books are mostly back. (There is a little room for some sequels/side stories, but it definitely wraps up nicely.)
