The Last Emperox

John Scalzi

4.1 AVERAGE

Between some genuinely surprising plot twists and a highly satisfying ending, this ended up being my favorite book of the trilogy. The relationships -- both romantic and platonic -- that Scalzi builds in the first two installments REALLY pay off here, both emotionally and in terms of the plot itself. Lastly, if you enjoy watching Kiva Lagos throw profanity-laden temper tantrums while simultaneously outsmarting everyone in the room, have I got good news for you!

I loved it. My absolute favorite in the series. (emotions)

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and enjoy Scalzi's work as a whole. He's my favorite sci-fi author which made The Last Emperox particularly disappointing. I think the plot points within the book can work, they just feel rushed. The plot comes really quickly, and the ramifications aren't really explored.

So I have mixed feeling about this one. I really liked it, it was really funny, literally laughed out loud, but...

After the second book I maybe had too high hopes for this one, Scalzi didnt failed to deliver a well written book. It was full of political strategy and surprises, is just that some elements felt forced and others were too out of the blue.
fast-paced

A very satisfying conclusion to The Interdependency trilogy. These books are all tightly written with plenty of action and palace intrigue. I wish there were three more coming, because I could read about this universe for years to come.

I chose to listen to the third installment in this series on audiobook. I like Wil Wheaton as an actor, but, not so much as a narrator as his voice lacks gravitas and he is not good at accents. Unfortunately, this negatively affected my enjoyment of this installment.

I love Kiva a lot. One of my favorite book characters of all time. Her plot, character development and dialog is f***ing amazing.

What let this down is the ending; it's rushed, doesn't resolve enough and is completely unsatisfying. I really hope there are more books in this series (or other series in this world) because I love this world, its characters, I want more of them and they deserve a better ending.

a keen sense of absurdity as several players bemoan palace intrigue in the face of civilization-level destruction but continue stirring it up. the very personal stakes are also higher. if you liked the foul-mouthed wrecking ball, well, she gets even more opportunities here.

having a better understanding of what I think is Scalzi’s approach to a book (maybe), I enjoyed this one a bit more than the others and found it more satisfying than I thought I might, when I saw how little space we had left to wrap up things I thought were still seriously hanging open. a fun story, though I’d look out for a good opportunity to acquire all three at once as some kind of package deal.

I also appreciate the easy way he skips months ahead to new events. just so easy. because this story needed things to work out on weird time scales.
